September 5, 2025, urging fresh law graduates to embrace uncertainty, explore diverse opportunities, and pursue authentic self-discovery. Speaking at the combined convocation ceremony for the 8th through 12th batches, he reminded graduates that the most transformative question they can ask themselves is: “What truly makes me happy?”
Breaking the Myth of Linear
Career Paths
Justice Kant challenged the
entrenched belief that young professionals must commit to a single career track
early in life.
“You may have
felt the pressure to choose a single, specific path and stick to it for the
rest of your lives. This is a bit of a fib,” he said, noting that passions and interests evolve
with time.
He stressed that few lawyers discover their calling overnight. Instead, the journey is marked by trial, error, and growth. Many, he said, are drawn to unexpected pursuits by a single lecture, a senior’s advice, or a fleeting moment of inspiration. “The world convinces us we must have all the answers, yet the wisest among us know that the journey of self-discovery is lifelong.”
The Transformative Power of Legal
Education
Highlighting the adaptability of
legal training, Justice Kant described law as uniquely “permeable.”
“Some
of you may discover your passion in advocacy, some in corporate offices, others
in teaching, public service, or something entirely unexpected. The magic of law
is its permeability—its ability to let you reinvent yourself, to switch lanes,
to start over.”
He reminded graduates that legal education offers not just the power to shape society, but also the power to reshape themselves. “Allow yourself the freedom to wonder, to wander, and, occasionally, to start anew,” he advised.
Lessons from Uncertainty: Justice
Kant’s Personal Journey
Justice Kant shared two pivotal
experiences that illustrated how uncertainty can open doors to growth.
·
Turning Down Judicial Services: Early in his career, after
clearing the written exam for judicial services, a High Court judge—who had
watched him argue a case—advised him not to join the judiciary, noting his
promise as an advocate. Despite anxiety and doubt, he chose to withdraw from
the interview.
·
Pursuing a Master’s Degree as a
Judge:
Years later, while serving as a High Court judge, he grappled with the decision
to pursue higher studies. Balancing academic rigor with judicial duties felt
daunting, yet he embraced the challenge.
“It was precisely these moments of self-doubt and trepidation that paved the way for growth,” he reflected.
The Importance of Relationships
and Community
Justice Kant also emphasized the
role of family, friendships, and community in sustaining a fulfilling career.
“Too
often, legal professionals put off time with family, delay friendships, and
postpone self-care, thinking their work must always come first. However, the
very moments you cherish most will be those spent among loved ones, in quiet
support and playful camaraderie.”
Using the metaphor of a Grand
Prix, he likened family and friends to a “pit crew” that sustains lawyers
through challenges. “The laughter, comfort, and love waiting for you
after a tough day in court gives you the strength to face whatever comes next.
Never underestimate the value of that pit stop.”
Practical
Guidance for Young Lawyers
Justice Kant’s address combined
inspiration with pragmatic wisdom. He urged graduates to:
·
Stay
open-minded
and resilient.
·
Invest
energy in discovering new pursuits.
·
Be
bold enough to try, fail, pivot, and succeed on their own terms.
What matters most, he said, is
not the rigidity of one’s career destination, but the authenticity
of the pursuit. “Happiness will meet you on roads
you may not yet have mapped.”

the academic success of five graduating batches. Supreme Court Justices JK
Maheshwari and P. Sri Narasimha graced the event alongside DSNLU Chancellor and

A
Broader Context
Justice Kant’s message resonates
at a time when young lawyers face shifting expectations in the profession.
Traditional career structures are giving way to new opportunities in corporate
law, policy, technology, and dispute resolution. His emphasis on flexibility,
self-discovery, and community reflects the realities of modern legal practice.
For the graduates of DSNLU, his
words served not just as a farewell to student life but as a blueprint for
navigating the complexities of legal careers—and life itself—with courage,
adaptability, and authenticity.
